Advanced study of two modules (each worth 10 points) from a selection of topics in exercise and sport science.
SPEX 450 and 451 are designed to provide students with core content inherent in the study of Exercise and Sport Science at postgraduate level. Students will select from a variety of modules offered by staff on topics related to their area of research expertise.

The individual modules will be taught by academic staff from the School of Physical Education, Sport and Exercise Science.
- Paper Structure
The paper is modular in nature with students selecting two modules, each worth 10 points, to meet the requirements of the papers. A list of module topics offered each year is available on the School of Physical Education, Sport and Exercise Science website. The specific modules offered may vary year to year, subject to staff availability and student interest.
- Teaching Arrangements
Each module has a generic teaching and assessment structure.
Teaching structure: Students will participate in 10 one-hour weekly lectures and 5 two-hour bi-weekly tutorials/laboratories for each module.
Assessment structure: Each module will comprise either a) two internal assessments worth 40% and 60% or b) three internal assessments worth 25%, 25% and 50%.
- Textbooks
A reading list for each module will be provided to students. There will be no textbooks required.
- Course outline
A course outline for each module will be provided to students at the start of the semester.

Due to the modular nature of SPEX 450, the specific learning outcomes depend on which modules are selected. For each module offered, specific learning outcomes will be created and presented in advance to students. In addition, the paper aims to provide students with the following generic learning outcomes:
- Demonstrate an in-depth understanding of the scope and application of the theories/content of the specific topics being studied
- Critically evaluate how research methods have been used to investigate the module specific topics
- Understand the need for independent critical evaluation of data and formation of evidence-based opinions
- Show an enhanced ability to logically analyse contemporary issues within the broad field of exercise and sport science
- Demonstrate an advanced knowledge of ethics and ethical standards relevant to exercise and sport science
- Work in a self-directed manner and to form independent decisions and judgements in the acquisition and development of scientific knowledge
- Apply specific skills (including digital-based) in acquiring, organising, analysing, evaluating and presenting information pertinent to exercise and sport science
