Cumberland prides itself on having an extensive and varied social activities programme, which has something for everyone.
Floor events
What better way to get to know the people on your floor than by doing something together? Dinners, movie nights, lazertag, pizza nights, going to see the capping show, secret admirers’ week and so on and so forth.
The great thing about floor events is that you get to decide with the rest of the floor what you do – you are only limited by your imagination.
Inter-college competitions
The University of Otago has long fostered inter-college rivalries. In 2016, the University launched a new and wide-ranging inter-college sports and cultural competition, with 17 sports and 15 cultural events.
In 2016, Cumberland placed 4th in the sports competition.
2017 saw Cumberland place second, and in 2018 Cumberland was crowned intercollegiate sporting champions after winning 7 events (women’s football, men’s rugby, men’s futsal, women’s and men’s renegade hockey, men’s and women’s touch), 8 second places, and 5 third places. An outstanding result.
The banners proudly adorn the College’s entrance hallway.
Cumberland is yet to place in the inter-college cultural competition, but participates in all events and encourages a wide range of cultural activities.
Social events
Cumberland College Ball, beach outings, quiz nights, Cumberland carnival are just some of the many fun activities on our event calender for the year.
Social sports

Formal dinners
Every few months we stick on our Sunday best and join together to celebrate by having a formal dinner. These are great occasions with fantastic food, drink and entertainment.
Annual ball
One of the highlights of the calendar is the Annual Cumberland College Ball. Dress up and get ready for a fantastic night.
Annual ski trip
Are you a powder junkie or a complete ski novice? Never fear the Cumberland Ski Trip can cater for every level. The perfect way to have fun in the snow and experience Central Otago in the middle of winter.
