Edgar Diabetes and Obesity Research members have successfully gained funding from the Health Research Council (HRC) of New Zealand. Ten EDOR members are named investigators on HRC programme and project grants totalling more than eight million dollars. Two projects of particular relevance to diabetes and obesity are led by Dr Kirsten Coppell and Professor Dave Grattan.
Dr Kirsten Coppell, co-director of EDOR, is principal investigator of a project in which practice nurses deliver a prediabetes dietary intervention in primary care practices. Her team will then determine if there are clinically relevant and modifiable differences between those who achieve normal blood sugar levels after 6 months, and those who do not. Any differences will be used to identify predictors of regression to normal blood sugar.
Professor Dave Grattan, from the Department of Anatomy at the University of Otago, leads a project to investigate a novel response in the brain that may be important in food regulation, and potentially could have a role in obesity.
