Graduated with BSc, MSc (Human Nutrition)
Science Adviser, Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI)

I chose to study at Otago because of its international reputation and continued on to postgraduate study because of the exceptional teaching experience offered. In addition to the proximity of the mountains and beaches - Dunedin has plenty of adventures to offer!

Studying at Otago provided me with the critical appraisal skills and strong foundation in nutrition knowledge that I have been able to apply to a variety of settings.

Through my experience at MPI and Otago I have had the opportunity to work in Ethiopia providing technical support in the establishment of a national food fortification programme, and to represent NZ at the Codex Alimentarius Committee on Nutrition – the WHO/FAO international food standard setting body.

Currently I work at the Ministry for Primary Industries which is the government agency responsible for food regulation in New Zealand. As part of my role I provide science advice to inform food policy, the development of food standards both at the trans-Tasman and international level. This can include topics as diverse as folic acid fortification, front-of-pack labelling, infant nutrition, and evaluating evidence to inform health claims.

If you are considering a career in nutrition, the University of Otago is a great place to study. Keep your mind open as to career prospects and be sure to connect and network with those working in a field that you want to pursue – who knows where you will end up!
