Graduated with BAppSc(Hons), MSc (Human Nutrition)

PhD Scholar and Accredited Sports Dietitian at the Australian Institute of Sport.
The opportunities of a degree in Human Nutrition at Otago are endless.
You can't beat the combination of theory, practice and critical thinking - a foundation that will set you on track for any nutrition or career path you choose to take.

To say my Otago experience prepared me for later academic and professional positions is an understatement!
I would not be where I am today without the guidance and skill development I received during my 5 years at Otago.
First was the Bachelor of Applied Science in Sports Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism and then I completed my Master of Science in Human Nutrition. As part of the first cohort of the Sports Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism major I had a mixture of excitement and risk that comes with forging the path ahead. This was a great experience because of the awesome staff who nurtured our development and provided great career advice. The combination of nutrition and exercise physiology is a natural fit.
I continued my academic studies in Dietetics at another university and I am grateful for the basic and practical research skills I learned during my time at Otago. From learning how to use Endnote, to using Boolean operators and research databases to the writing and critical thinking and analysis. These, combined with the practical laboratory experiences from nutrition and sport science, gave me a rounded approach to learning as well as being a high calibre graduate.
I use the skills I learned every day as PhD scholar and Accredited Sports Dietitian at the Australian Institute of Sport, where I work with developing basketball and tennis athletes. It's really important to be able to apply the research you read and conduct in a practical setting. That's what the Sports Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism major first allowed me to do through the Applied Science Work Experience paper which gave me my first opportunity in high performance sport at the New Zealand Academy of Sport South Island (now High Performance Sport New Zealand).
