The University
The University of Melbourne Founded in 1853, the University of Melbourne is a public-spirited institution that makes distinctive contributions to society in research, learning and teaching and engagement. It's consistently ranked among the leading universities in the world, with international rankings of world universities placing it as number 1 in Australia and number 31 in the world (Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2021).
Melbourne is the capital city of the state of Victoria and with a population of 4.8 million people is the state's largest (and Australia's second largest) city. Consistently voted as one of the world's most liveable cities, Melbourne is the cultural and sporting capital of Australia with many festivals and sporting events held throughout the year. With 38% of the population born overseas and 140 cultures represented, Melbourne is extremely multi-cultural and welcoming of people from all backgrounds. With almost all food cuisines catered for, Melbourne's food scene is world class, and boasts more coffee shops per capita than any other city in the world!
Exchange Information
- Undergraduate and graduate exchange
- Students must have completed a minimum of two semesters at Otago
- Academic Year: February – December (Semester 1: February – June; Semester 2: July – December)
- Minimum course load: 37.5 points for one semester; maximum course load: 50 points (usually 4 x 12.5 points per subject) for one semester
- Terminology – Course: A degree or program studied, for example, the Bachelor of Arts is an undergraduate course. Courses vary in length from three to seven years; Subject: A unit within a course, for example the subject “Aboriginal Art” can form part of the Bachelor of Arts course. You can search for undergraduate subjects using the online handbook
- Note: not all subjects are open to incoming exchange students. When looking at the handbook it will specifically mention under the ‘further information’ tab if a subject is open to incoming exchange students. There is a guide students can download to assist them in navigating the online handbook
- It is an Australian Government requirement that all international students must have health insurance, known as Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC), from an approved Australian provider. No Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) documents will be issued until a student has either purchased OSHC through the University of Melbourne or provided evidence of having purchased this insurance
