English language requirements for PhDs supervised by the Faculty of Law
If your first language is not English, you must provide evidence of English language proficiency. Please note that the English language requirements for admission to the PhD supervised by the Faculty of Law are higher than the standard University of Otago requirements.
Programmes with higher English language requirements
Distance study
Domestic candidates may undertake a PhD in Law while based elsewhere in New Zealand, subject to approval. Candidates are expected to maintain regular contact with their supervisors throughout their candidature and may be required to spend periods of time on campus.
Expressions of interest
Before making a formal application, all prospective candidates should complete an Expression of Interest form. This allows the Faculty of Law to assess whether appropriate supervision is available and whether the proposed research aligns with the Faculty's areas of expertise.
If the proposed project is a good fit with the Faculty's supervision capacity and research strengths, candidates will be invited to submit a formal application through the University's application process.
