    Overview

    The Early Learning in Medicine (ELM) programme (years 2 and 3) continues the medical science learning which began in Health Sciences First Year (Medical Science Module) while introducing students to patients, their communities and their points of view (early professional experience, integrated cases and clinical skills). The learning emphasis in ELM is active and collaborative; integrated; and contextually and community based. The introduction to patients and patient context take place in a combination of the Early Professional Experience (EPE), Integrated Cases and Clinical Skills Programme Modules. Within EPE, students visit patients in their own homes, work in a nursing home and interview volunteer patients from the Friends of the Medical School. Clinical Skills sessions provide opportunities to learn and practise clinical skills (consultation skills, physical examination and practical procedures) and to develop basic clinical reasoning.

    In ELM, students spend about 45% of their time in formal teaching situations (lectures, labs) and about 15% in small groups (case tutorials, supervised patient contact), with the remaining 40% of non-contact time allocated to independent learning.

    Learning Outcomes

    Students that complete Early Learining in Medicine (MICN201 nad MICN301) will have demonstrated competency in the foundational knowledge, skills and attitudes required to progress to Advanced Learning in Medicine.  This will include a foundational understanding of the biopsychosocial basis for health and disease, and the professional requirements for the practice of clinical medicine.
