Overview

Hippocratic PlaneThis tree was presented to the Medical School in 1980 by Dr Barrie Tait, Senior Lecturer in Medicine, Christchurch Clinical School.

It was grown from seed obtained from the famous plane tree on the island of Cos in the Greek Archipelago under which Hippocrates (460–370 BC) taught in the fourth century BC.

The plaque was designed by Paul Beadle, Professor of Fine Arts, University of Auckland.
