Review of basic surveying techniques and instruments.
This introductory field camp is a practical and intensive hands-on use of various types of survey equipment, survey methodologies, procedures and calculations. The field camp begins in late January/early February and finishes before the first semester begins. The camp will refine and follow on from survey field skills learned in SURV 101.

This paper can only be taken by BSurv students or BSc students majoring in Surveying Measurement and is a requirement for entry into the professional survey programme. Passing this field camp is also a requirement for taking SURV 201.

- Paper Structure
This paper consists of a variety of lectures followed by daily survey field exercises. Each field exercise involves survey field work and is followed by calculations, tabulation, presentation and reporting of the survey information. Students work with a partner and as part of a bigger team under a group leader who facilitates the exercises. The camp runs for a maximum of three weeks (including some weekend work) and may include time away from Dunedin. A wide variety of survey equipment is used in conjunction with these fieldwork practicals. While this paper is worth 0 EFTS, there are associated costs to be paid by the student for the running of this camp.
- Teaching Arrangements
- This field camp is graded as Pass/Fail. The student must reach a satisfactory level of competency in order to pass the field camp. This level of competency is assessed by successfully completing all of the practical exercises related to the paper's aims and objectives. There is no final exam associated with this paper.

- There are no textbooks required for this paper. However, access to a survey text or the SURV 101 Course Reader will greatly assist the student during the camp.
