The University of Otago Foundation Studies Certificate is a university entrance qualification that can be completed within two 13-week semesters and is open to domestic and international students. This is a NZQF Level 4 qualification.
The Foundation Studies Certificate is the ideal pathway programme for students who do not meet university entrance requirements, but who have a strong desire to achieve a university degree and seek a supportive environment to achieve that goal.
The Foundation Studies Certificate comprises a carefully paced series of courses which give students a solid foundation of academic knowledge, study skills and the confidence to succeed at university.
Foundation Studies Certificate subject areas and intakes
There are four main subject streams for the Foundation Studies Certificate. Each stream prepares you for a smooth progression from pathway studies into your chosen undergraduate degree.
- Health Sciences – February and June intakes
- Sciences – February, June and October intakes
- Business – February, June and October intakes
- Arts/Humanities – February, June and October intakes

If you do not meet the academic entry requirements, the Bridging Programme may be an option for you. This is a short course to support students who require additional preparation and confidence before starting the Foundation Studies Certificate. (Note the Bridging Programme is not being offered with intake two or three during 2026).

Accommodation for Foundation Studies Certificate students
The University welcomes foundation students to the following accommodation options:
Students already in New Zealand (international or domestic) should apply for a place in a Residential College before 30 September in the year prior to study.
International students located offshore should, where possible, apply for a Residential College before 1 December in the year prior to study.
