- Joseph is involved in treating a wide range of malocclusions. He has a particular interest in the use of miniscrews and miniplates to treat severe malocclusions.
Research
Joseph's previous research has focused on the clinical and psychological aspects of the long face morphology. Excessive vertical facial growth is a relatively common condition, which often results in challenging malocclusions that require both orthodontic treatment and jaw surgery to treat. In order to investigate the aetiology of this growth pattern, Joseph has been involved in setting-up a case-control study that aims to identify common SNPs associated with the long face morphology (as well as other dentofacial anomalies such as congenitally missing teeth). The research is carried out in conjunction with the Merriman Lab in the Department of Biochemistry.
Joseph's current research interests include craniofacial growth and development, clinical genetics, and quality of life assessment. He is also particularly interested in emerging digital technologies that can be used in clinical orthodontics and craniofacial research.
Joseph was also awarded Emerging Researcher First Grant by the Health Research Council in 2013.
