Bioethics Seminar | Ethical challenges in learning healthcare systems
Dr Stuart McLennan, Institute for Biomedical Ethics, University of Basel, Switzerland
Health care systems around the world are increasingly looking to derive knowledge from clinical practice and use this knowledge to drive the cycle of continuous health care improvement. Although such activities to improve are and patient safety are urgently needed, many occupy a "grey zone" where research cannot always be clearly differentiated from non-research.
This can result in uncertainty about how these activities should be ethically handled, including determining when ethical review and participant notification and consent are required.
This seminar will present the findings of a systematic qualitative review of the ethical issues that are raised for stakeholders in a "Learning Health Care System" and discuss the relevance of these findings for New Zealand.
