Most postgraduate students are able to work in paid employment during their studies if they wish.

Business School Employment

Many Departments in the Business School offer post-grad students paid teaching and research positions. Depending on the Department, post-grad students can apply for a variety of teaching and research roles to supplement their studies and contribute to their department.

Speak to your Department Manager if you are interested in an academic role within your department.

Student Job Search can also assist students in finding employment during their studies.

Entrepreneurial support

In conjunction with the Otago Polytechnic, the University of Otago provides support for budding entrepreneurs through Audacious. Audacious offers various forms of support, including a Student Business Coach, Audacious business plan challenge, the Food for Thought network, and the StartUp lounge.

Note - International PhD students are eligible to pay tuition fees at the New Zealand domestic level. International PhD students must be resident in New Zealand, apart from approved temporary absences overseas for the purposes of doctoral research, during their study to be classified as domestic students.


A range of scholarships are available for students undertaking various postgraduate programmes.

Financial support is available from the School to enable all PhD students to present their work at international conferences, up to a limit of $2500 during the period of study. Further conference travel and fieldwork support may be available from your department.

Study space, facilities and computer resources

The School of Business provides every postgraduate student with 24-hour access to their own secure study space, including a computer with internet access.

Resources available depend on the programme for which the student is enrolled and the department in which the study is being undertaken. Most postgraduate study space is housed in the Commerce Building on the corner of Clyde and Union Streets, with some business departments utilising adjacent buildings.

Otago Business School staff room

The Otago Business School staff room is also available for the use of PhD students. Many Business School staff functions are held in the staff room, and PhD students are often invited.
