Jo is an experienced educator who has taught across all levels, from first year to Doctoral level within the University sector and the Vocational Education sector in New Zealand. Jo joined the DBA programme in 2025. Jo has several business-related qualifications including a Bachelor of Commerce (Hons), a Master of Commerce focusing on quality improvement, and a PhD on gender comparison of motivations for becoming an entrepreneur. Jo also has a Graduate Diploma in Tertiary Education, with a focus around adult learners and postgraduate supervision, and a Certificate in Bicultural Competency.

Jo has a special interest in postgraduate supervision and has supervised over 130 postgraduate students to completion, largely in applied programmes and professional Masters and Doctorates. Jo has been previously recognised as a Top 12 supervisor award by Otago University Students Association. Jo is also an experienced postgraduate examiner across several Australasian institutions and has provided committed Academic Leadership to several Masters and Doctoral programmes in the Tertiary Education sector. Jo has held several governance roles within the not-for-profit sector and is a member of the Institute of Directors New Zealand.

Jo’s research focuses on entrepreneurship, with interests in women entrepreneurs, ecopreneurs, social entrepreneurs and family entrepreneurship.  Jo has also explored Tall Poppy Syndrome and its impact. Her research has been published in a range of international journals, including International Journal of Entrepreneurial Behaviour and Research, Entrepreneurship and Regional Development, Australasian Journal of Environmental Management, International Journal of Gender and Entrepreneurship, Gender in Management: An International Journal, Journal of Management and Organization, Energy Policy, The International Journal of Entrepreneurship and Innovation and Small Enterprise Research

Jo serves as Deputy Editor of Small Enterprise Research and is on editorial boards of International Journal of Gender and Entrepreneurship, New Zealand Journal of Applied Business Research and Review of International Business and Strategy and on the Editorial Review Board of International Journal of Entrepreneurial Behavior and Research.
