About the course

Close up on nurse injecting into prosthetic arm in a simulation setting.

We are trying to assess interest in a proposed new course we will be offering.

The delivery of procedural sedation by generalist rural practitioners is a valuable skill that can prevent the need for patient transfer to urban centres. It is safe when performed with adequate preparation, knowledge and skill. However, it is generally learnt informally with few practitioners having had formalised training.

The University of Otago Rural Postgraduate Programme is developing a new simulation-based course for rural practitioners of procedural sedation. The course will include independent online learning followed by an intensive simulation workshop spread over two days. It will be at a level appropriate for those with existing experience of procedural sedation or for those newly developing these skills.

This year the workshops will be at the Rural Health Academic Centre in Ashburton.
