Survival rates for many cancers are frustratingly low and we need to better understand the basis of this disease to improve treatment options.

Increasing evidence suggests that besides the high mutational load in cancers the modifications of proteins play a major role. These include oxidation events that are frequently observed in various cancers.

During this project the students will identify novel oxidative modifications of key cancer-related proteins by using different methods. Depending on the interest of the students, they will focus on the following techniques (or a combination thereof):

  • Measurement of protein oxidation and their impact on biological functions using biophysical techniques such as nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and fluorescence based methods
  • Studying covalent protein modifications by mass spectrometry
  • Cell culture methods to identify the functional consequences of protein oxidation
  • Computational modelling of functional protein modifications

We are looking for enthusiastic students and appreciate their contributions to project outline and design. The proposed work is part of international research projects with collaborators in Germany, Canada, the United States and Australia.

Preferred student expertise:

High enthusiasm and interest in research is more important than a specific background, students from various disciplines are accepted.
