Dr Teagan Edwards completed her PhD at the Centre for Redox Biology and Medicine. She investigated the structural and functional changes that occur when the inflammatory protein calprotectin is oxidised. She also discovered that calprotectin is degraded into unique fragments at sites of infection and inflammation. These protein fragments were detected in airway fluid from children with cystic fibrosis, a disease in which white blood cells respond to bacterial infection and destroy lung tissue.

She has extensive experience in biomarker research and development using specialised techniques including enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and mass spectrometry.

Her current project involves exploring the performance of myeloperoxidase, an enzyme released by immune cells to defend against invading pathogens, as a non-invasive biomarker of inflammation in children with inflammatory bowel disease.
