Research interests

Dr Nick Magon carried out his PhD at Mātai Hāora - Centre for Redox Biology and Medicine under the supervision of Professors' Mark Hampton, Tony Kettle and Richard Gearry. He investigated inflammatory biomarkers produced as a result of neutrophil activation, primarily using protein purification and mass spectrometry.

After his PhD, he worked as a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Pathology and Immunology at the University of Geneva. There he investigated the molecular mechanisms of red blood cell ageing during cold storage using a range of techniques, including flow cytometry.

His current research utilises mass spectrometry to characterise and quantify oxidative modifications across proteins, peptides and small molecules. By uncovering these distinct chemical signatures, his work aims to identify robust molecular biomarkers to track pathological progression and improve disease diagnosis. He is also responsible for maintaining and further developing our commercial oxidative biomarker Protein Carbonyl Assay Kit.
