Mark's interests are in cornea and external disease, paediatrics and cataract surgery.

He is the Ophthalmology convenor for the 5th Year undergraduate programme: Orthopaedics and Advanced Medicine.

He was recently HOD for the Department of Ophthalmology, Christchurch Hospital and served on the Christchurch Hospital Management Committee and the Credentialing Committee and the Deputy Chair of the Staff Association.

Mark has held many College positions including Examiner (for the last 16 years), Chair of the Education and Qualification Committee and more recently, Senior Inspector and Chair of the Board of Pathologists.

He sat on the Overseas Trained Specialist assessment panels for Ophthalmology both in NZ and Australia for many years.

He undertook postgraduate studies at Moorfields Eye Hospital, London and Great Ormond Street Hospital for Sick Children, London.

He also worked at the St John Ophthalmic Hospital, Jerusalem and was the Hospitaller for New Zealand. He is a Commander of the Order of St John. He has been a consultant to UNICEF and worked in Bosnia during the war.

He has published over 50 first name papers, 16 book chapters, written one book.
