BA(Hons), DipGrad, and PGDipArts

The Classics Programme offers three postgraduate qualifications that follow on closely from the Bachelor of Arts degree:

Students who have completed a BA with a major in Classics may qualify to go on in their fourth year to pursue a BA(Hons) degree or a Postgraduate Diploma in Arts. The course is the same for both, but the latter may be taken part-time. Students who have completed a degree in another discipline may apply for a Diploma for Graduates in Classics to help make the transition to postgraduate study in Classics.

These qualifications provide advanced training in Classics and an opportunity to conduct independent research. They thus form an excellent basis for advanced postgraduate study at the MA and PhD levels. The skills developed in pursuing these qualifications should also secure you an advantage in a competitive job market and enhance your employment prospects.

MA and PhD study

The Classics Programme offers the following advanced postgraduate degrees:

  • A one-year Master of Arts by thesis, which is open to those who have already completed a BA(Hons) degree or equivalent.
  • A one-year or 3 semester Master of Arts by coursework.
  • A three-year PhD by thesis.

Areas of research

Supervision is available in the following areas:

  • Greek drama, women in ancient Greece, Greek mythology (Dr Arlene Allan)
  • Greek myth, Greek epic and tragedy Greek Environments/Landscapes (Dr Chloe Borowska)
  • Greek and Roman mythology and religion, and Roman political history (Associate Professor Gwynaeth McIntyre)
  • Greek and Roman philosophy, especially Cicero and Epicurus (Associate Professor Sean McConnell)
  • Roman Spain, Greek and Roman art and archaeology (Dr Dan Osland)
