If you’re going on exchange through the Otago Global Student Exchange Programme, you may be eligible for scholarships to help support your time overseas.
Eligibility
To be eligible for Otago Global exchange funding, you must:
- Be an Otago student participating in the Otago Global Student Exchange Programme
- Have a New Zealand bank account
Scholarships and awards are reviewed annually.
Otago Global Student Exchange Scholarship
All students (domestic and international) on exchange automatically receive an Otago Global Travel Scholarship. No application required.
- NZ$1,000 – one or two semesters
- NZ$500 – less than one semester
Please note: You can only receive the Otago Global Scholarship once during your studies.
Otago Global Matariki Scholarship
You’ll receive an additional NZ$500 if you attend a Matariki Network of Universities partner on exchange. No application required.

- Uppsala University, Sweden
Westpac Travelling Scholarships (Business School)
These scholarships support Otago Business School students going on exchange to a PIM (Partnership in International Management) partner institution.
You must:
- Be enrolled in an Otago Business School degree or diploma
- Demonstrate leadership and responsibility in business, community, or education
Value: Up to NZ$3,000
Closing dates:
- Otago semester Two exchange: 30 May
- Otago semester One exchange: 30 October

Margaret Jean Ackley Food Science Exchange Award
Food Science students on exchange may be eligible for this award. No application required.
- Value: NZ$500
- Available to students receiving credit for at least one Food Science paper on exchange. You can only receive this award once
We are grateful to Margaret Jean Ackley for her generous bequest to Food Science students. A maximum of 20 awards is available.

Some scholarships are available for students going to specific countries or regions.
Otago Global Student Exchange: Country and region-specific scholarships
Erasmus+
The University of Otago has Erasmus+ agreements with these European partner universities: FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg, Leipzig University, Middle East Technical University (METU), and the Warsaw School of Economics.
Through these agreements, Erasmus+ funding may be available to Otago students. Funding amounts vary depending on the destination and funding available each year.
A typical Erasmus+ grant may include:
- €1,735 travel grant
- €850 per month living allowance
Key things to know:
- Erasmus+ opportunities are limited and not available every year.
- Some Erasmus+ scholarships are specific to certain majors or academic areas.
- Students are often selected by their Otago department.
- The Otago Global team will contact eligible students applying to an institution where Erasmus+ funding is available.
