Successful completion of this paper provides a foundation in the principles of property law. This has two aspects:
- First, 'property thinking' is an important element in all legal systems. Ownership and possession, what they mean, how they are protected, how they are acquired and lost, how 'property interests' impact upon other persons' rights: all these matter to the way a legal system is constructed, as well as mattering to the people served by the legal system
- Secondly, this paper paves the way for advanced papers in later years. Papers such as Commercial Transactions, Secured Transactions, Crime and Property, Māori Land Law, Landlord and Tenant, Wills and Trusts, Commercial Equity, Intellectual Property, Insolvency Law, Banking Law, Insurance Law, Advanced Family Property Law and Restitution all take some understanding of property law for granted
