This paper provides an opportunity for registered nurses working in rural locations to advance their theoretical knowledge and clinical skills to meet the unique challenges of delivering health care to individuals and their families/whānau in rural hospital and community settings.

Learning Outcomes

Students who successfully complete the paper will:

  • Critique and synthesise theoretical frameworks in rural health and nursing practice.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the principles of rural health care and health promotion philosophies and the contribution of these to advancing nursing practice.
  • Appraise research and information appropriate to the implementation of evidence-based practice with the aim of providing excellence in rural health care nursing.
  • Evaluate rural health care nursing models for practice.
  • Apply advanced individual/population/community assessment skills as relevant to own practice.
  • Apply principles of cultural safety and be reflexive to client, community/whānau/families and social issues in practice.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of effective collaboration, interdisciplinary communication and leadership in decision making and governance of service delivery to population group(s) in own practice.
  • Work within legal and ethical frameworks in the provision of rural health care nursing and in relation to national guidelines, policies and protocols.
