PHAL428 Current Research Literature in Toxicology

PHAL 428 consists of a series of student lead seminars, and is a requirement for an MSc in Toxicology. The aim of this paper is to provide an advanced analysis of experimental research in Toxicology. The paper is divided in modules based on the research interests of the students enrolled each year.

Paper Structure

The aim is to provide a forum for the advanced analysis and discussion of current theories and topics in toxicology. The paper is structured into weekly seminars based on recent papers published in various toxicology, cancer and biochemistry journals. These seminars are divided into module topics based on the research interests of the class members. In each module, the concepts build upon each other and thus the discussions will build upon each other in each week. These sessions are roundtable, student-driven discussions. Written work consists of the analysis and future directions of recently published research in toxicology.

100% internal assessment. No exam.

  • Presentations and discussion of current research literature in toxicology (55%)
  • Written analysis of a research topic (25%)
  • Reviewer assessment of a submitted paper (15%)
  • Mentoring undergraduate students in poster preparation (5%)

Learning Outcomes

The paper will take the form of weekly seminars based on recent papers published in various toxicology, cancer and biochemistry journals. You will critically review the manuscript, followed by group discussion. The oral and written ability to scrutinize published research and interpret the findings is the major learning outcome. Teamwork, mentoring and applying knowledge gained throughout the year is a secondary learning outcome.
