Overview
The MSc in Cognitive Science at the University of Otago is the first of its kind in New Zealand, providing an interdisciplinary approach to fundamental and applied questions of cognition within the framework of a single degree. Staff from disciplines of Anatomy, Computer Science, Information Science, Linguistics, Philosophy, Psychology and Zoology provide complementary and interdisciplinary approaches to the study of cognition. Cognitive Science includes study of the foundations of knowledge, biological and electrical systems that represent and use knowledge and formal models of cognition. In applications, the study of Cognitive Science can yield improvements in the design of control and communication systems, expert systems and educational software.

- Eligibility
- The main criterion for admission to the MSc Cognitive Science is a suitable background in any one, or a combination, of the following areas: Computer Science, Information Science, Linguistics, Logic, Neuroscience, Philosophy and Psychology. In general, students are expected to have gained at least a B- in the major subject of their undergraduate degree (BSc, BA or BASc). Course work or degree work undertaken subsequent to a BSc, BA or BASc will also be taken into account.

- This is a MSc degree, which is a 2-year programme, with the first year consisting of 400-level papers, and the second year consisting of the MSc research project (please see our other MSc programmes for additional information).
