This paper develops curriculum and pedagogical knowledge within a specialist secondary learning area. Students engage with subject-specific approaches to teaching, learning and assessment, as well as design learning experiences aligned with the New Zealand Curriculum.

Teaching team includes University of Otago College of Education staff and practising secondary school teachers contributing to specialist curriculum modules.
- Paper Structure
The paper includes core curriculum components and specialist learning area modules. Students complete learning activities and contribute to a Learning Portfolio demonstrating engagement with curriculum, pedagogy and assessment.
- Teaching Arrangements
Teaching is delivered through online learning modules on Aoroa/Brightspace, which include structured independent learning activities, guided tasks and discussion components. Learning is integrated with school-based professional experience. Specialist modules are developed by University staff and practising teachers.

Readings and resources are provided via Aoroa/Brightspace, including academic readings, Ministry of Education curriculum documents (e.g. Te Mātaiaho / NZ Curriculum refresh) and subject-specific resources developed by curriculum specialists.

By the end of EDGD 330, student teachers will be able to:
- Demonstrate a sound understanding of the New Zealand Curriculum in the secondary school context.
- Apply the New Zealand Curriculum to meet the diverse learning needs of students in Years 7-13 within specific learning areas, using evidence-based approaches.
- Critically engage with a range of theoretical approaches to teaching and learning.
- Plan effectively by identifying appropriate learning intentions, teaching and learning approaches, resources, as well as assessment strategies to engage diverse learners in Years 7-13.
- Demonstrate an awareness of the need to authentically integrate te reo Māori me ngā tikanga Māori within their relevant curriculum areas.
