Overview
A reading-based beginners’ paper covering the basic elements of Latin grammar and vocabulary and designed to develop reading skills in Latin.
As an introduction to the Latin language, this paper is designed to help students develop the skills needed to read and understand texts written by some of the great Roman authors, such as Cicero and Horace. In addition, this intensive study of the Latin language also seeks to improve students' communication skills by offering a deeper understanding of the English language and its Latin roots. Finally, this paper introduces various aspects of Roman culture and its contemporary reflections through literary and historical background readings.

- Paper Structure
This paper introduces students to the Latin language through:
- Explanations of basic points of English and Latin grammar
- A gradual approach to Latin vocabulary and its close cognates in the English language
- A cumulative approach to reading assignments that incorporates previously-learned material and new information
- The identification of useful external tools that may be useful in further advancing the study of Latin after the paper has concluded
- Teaching Arrangements
- Four 50-minute lectures per week, each lecture consisting of interactive practice exercises and thorough engagement between students and lecturer.

Students who successfully complete this paper will:
- Acquire the Latin language skills necessary for success in LATN 112
- Learn the fundamentals of the classical Latin language
- Develop an appreciation for Roman culture and its relationship to the contemporary world
- Gain a deeper understanding of the English language and, in particular, its vocabulary
- Gain some familiarity with the great works of Latin poetry and prose by famous authors, such as Virgil, Catullus, Caesar, Cicero and Livy, and with the historical background of these authors' works
