We want you to develop and advance the legal skills introduced to you in the Legal System course in the particular context of the criminal law. These include:
- Understanding the general rules, principles and policies governing criminal law in New Zealand.
- Interpreting and applying criminal law statutes (principally the Crimes Act 1961).
- Reading and critically analysing cases.
- Reasoning and arguing a legal position.
- Applying your knowledge to new situations.
- Writing a clearly reasoned legal opinion that identifies and critically analyses the relevant issues, expresses legal conclusions and where relevant, advises on appropriate courses of action.
