Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this paper, students will be able to:

  • Identify the legal principles of tikaka Māori law and describe how they work together as an integrated legal order;
  • Demonstrate legal reasoning within tikaka Māori law, the connections of key tikaka jural concepts such as mana and tapu and formulate utu and ea resolutions and processes;
  • Critically analyse tikaka arguments in caselaw and use tikaka Māori legal principles and the tikaka Māori normative framework to propose arguments in novel fact scenarios;
  • Draft legal submissions to advocate for Māori communities;
  • Engage with tikaka Māori jural processes in the legal setting such as mihi andkarakia, working with tikaka evidence and with Pūkeka (expert witnesses).
