Understanding the environmental, cultural and societal impact of design, as well as resource use (materials, energy) that shape what we use, whether products, systems or services, will embed the principles of sustainable design with responsible resource use and processes.

    Paper Structure

    Through the paper, your skills and knowledge development are guided by a suggested timeline for autonomous learning and workshop interactions with lecturers and peers.

    Teaching Arrangements

    This paper is a mix of autonomous learning from online lectures and field trips, and face-to-face on-campus workshops. The lectures and workshops are from academics and other professionals who specialise in various areas of sustainability.

    Through studying SCNC 503, students have the opportunity to obtain a University of Otago Tī Kōuka (Sustainability) Badge. Embedding sustainability knowledge, skills, understanding and habits is an important part of sustainability becoming an integral part of a person’s thinking and action. This badge would be evidence that Otago graduates have a high level of sustainability literacy and can contribute to sustainability within a bi-cultural Tiriti o Waitangi-based context of Aotearoa New Zealand.
