Postgraduate cardiology is about mastery and impact. You develop expertise to improve outcomes for patients with complex cardiac conditions.
Cardiology focuses on understanding, diagnosing, and managing diseases of the heart and cardiovascular system.
At postgraduate level, cardiology offers the chance to deepen your clinical reasoning and apply advanced knowledge to real patient contexts. Cardiovascular disease remains one of the leading causes of illness and mortality worldwide, making this field both challenging and deeply relevant. You will explore how physiology, pathology, and technology intersect in clinical practice, while developing the judgement and confidence needed for complex decision-making. Postgraduate study also supports professional growth, whether you are advancing within a clinical role, moving into leadership, or engaging with research that shapes future care. If you are motivated by precision, responsibility, and the opportunity to make a tangible difference in people’s lives, cardiology offers a purposeful and rewarding pathway.
Postgraduate cardiology study supports advanced and specialised roles across clinical and health settings.
Possible career pathways include:
Postgraduate cardiology study combines advanced theory with applied, clinically relevant learning.
You will engage with in-depth cardiovascular science while connecting learning to real clinical scenarios. Teaching emphasises critical thinking, interpretation of complex data, and reflective practice. You may work alongside clinicians, researchers, and peers from related health disciplines, building confidence through discussion and collaboration. Learning is designed to support working professionals, with a focus on applying new knowledge directly to practice and improving patient care.
Students must be employed as a Cardiac Technologist and have completed the Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Technology. This Postgraduate Diploma in Medical Technology, endorsed in Cardiology, has a focus on cardiac arrhythmia, heart failure and ischemic heart disease, and the key tools used in the diagnosis and management of these conditions.
Whether you are advancing your career with our specialised graduate qualifications or pursuing in-depth research and expertise through our postgraduate programmes, Otago is here to support your aspirations.
Honours, masters’, PhDs, and other advanced degrees for graduates. Just one additional year of study will earn you a valuable postgraduate degree. Or perhaps you want the depth of a full year of research-only time during a master’s or to step up to a PhD.
