Your journey into Biblical Studies starts here. Uncover the texts, explore their context, and discover how they speak to life, culture, and society today.

    Why study Biblical Studies?

Biblical Studies invites you to explore the Bible in depth – examining its writings within their ancient historical, cultural, and linguistic contexts.

Biblical Studies explores and examines Jewish and Christian scriptures, focusing on the Old and New Testaments in their ancient contexts. Topics include interpreting biblical texts, their history, and the history of their interpretation. Students can also study classical Hebrew and New Testament Greek to an advanced level.

This study builds not just knowledge but critical thinking, communication and cultural awareness. You’ll gain tools to engage with big questions – about identity, justice, belief and meaning, and you’ll do so in a supportive, lively environment.

Whether your interest is academic, personal or vocational, Biblical Studies at Otago opens up pathways of discovery and growth.

    Career opportunities

When you study Biblical Studies, you’re developing strong analytical, research and language skills – those skills translate into many careers. You’ll be prepared for work that calls for clarity of thought, cultural insight and ethical reflection.

    Careers might include:

    • Church or faith-community ministry, youth work or chaplaincy
    • Education, teaching or tertiary support roles
    • Writing, publishing, media or communication work
    • Roles in heritage, archives or cultural organisations
    • Further postgraduate study and specialist research

    How you will learn

You’ll study both the Old Testament (Tanakh or Hebrew Bible) and the New Testament, developing skills to interpret and appreciate these texts with fresh understanding.

On-campus students take part in interactive lectures with opportunities for discussion, while distance students can join live via Zoom or watch recordings at their convenience. Some distance papers also offer optional in-person teaching days in Wellington, with full online access for those unable to attend.

In advanced papers, small tutorials provide space to explore key ideas in more depth and strengthen your understanding.

Assessment includes a mix of written assignments, in-class tests, and final exams.

    Nick List

Since studying at Otago, I have gone on to do my PhD at the University of Cambridge, and have recently taken up a research fellowship at Radboud University in The Netherlands. As I continue to research and teach on the New Testament, I hope to model the kind of collegiality, curiosity, and integrity that I first encountered as an undergrad in Otago’s Theology programme.
