Early Childhood PLD

Strengthening Early Learning Opportunities (SELO) Programme

Education Support Services has several contracts with the Ministry of Education providing whole-centre professional support and development to early childhood services. SELO (strengthening early learning opportunities for children, whānau, families and communities) is a professional development programme for early learning.

These programmes are aimed at increasing the quality of early childhood services. There are three different programmes available, all focussing on responding to Ministry of Education requirements for strengthened practice, particularly with regards to priority learners.

Each programme will be shaped to the service's needs.

SELO Programme 1

This programme provides in-depth professional development.

It is available to licensed early childhood education (ECE) services and kōhanga reo in locations identified by the Ministry of Education. An Education Support Services facilitator will work directly with management and teachers/educators for a specific timeframe on identified topics to ensure a shift in practice towards delivering high quality early childhood education.

The focus of the topics and timeframes are developed in consultation with the Ministry of Education at the outset of centre engagement in this programme.

SELO Programme 2

This programme focuses on community specific professional development in locations identified by the Ministry of Education and is designed to strengthen the responsiveness of ECE services to the identity, language, and culture of their communities.

The professional development is designed for certificated playgroups and children/whānau with special education needs are included in this programme. Participating services and/or clusters are identified by the Ministry of Education and the programme is flexible in duration.

Topics will vary according to needs identified by the Ministry. Education Support Services facilitators will work flexibly to support management and teachers/educators in this professional development to enhance each centres practice.

SELO Programme 3

This programme involves professional learning and development delivered to services in targeted communities identified by the Ministry of Education and covers seven threads. These threads focus on different areas within the early childhood education environment:

  • Strengthening early learning opportunities for infants and toddlers
  • Strengthening early learning opportunities in Te Aho Tukutuku/early mathematics
  • Strengthening early learning opportunities in early literacy
  • Strengthening Māori leadership in early childhood services
  • Strengthening Pasifika leadership in early childhood services
  • Strengthening leaders in early childhood services
  • Whakapiki i te Reo Māori

Education Support Services facilitators use a variety of delivery models in this programme including: whole day wānanga, face to face support and individual mentoring.
