Research interests

Dr Vanessa Lau's research focuses on the genetic changes that influence the risk of breast and ovarian cancer with the goal of improving early detection and prevention for people with an elevated genetic risk. She is currently characterising susceptibility genes associated with a moderate to high cancer risk, while also exploring potential preventative approaches for individuals who carry high-risk genetic variants. In addition, she is assessing the protocols for breast and ovarian gene screening in New Zealand to determine whether they are adequate for identifying all high-risk variant carriers, including those most likely to benefit from targeted treatments.
