Ruth graduated from Edinburgh University, training in several academic surgical units. She completed her PhD at St Georges Healthcare NHS Trust (UK) with the support of a Royal College of Surgeons research fellowship. She has presented her research at major international vascular meetings and had a tenure as president of the VERN collaborative research group, leading international studies of the vascular experience of COVID.

She has held positions as Surgical Speciality Lead in Vascular Surgery Research for the Royal College of Surgeons of England, and has led NIHR funded studies to publication. She now leads the 4th-year surgical block for vascular and plastic surgery, and dermatology, and is involved in vascular teaching events.
