Tim Smith is a Consultant Anaesthetist and Head of the Anaesthesia Section of the Department of Surgery and Critical Care at the University of Otago, Christchurch.

He gained Fellowship of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists in 2007 and also holds Fellowship of the Royal College of Anaesthetists.

He has worked as an anaesthetist in Australia, the UK and New Zealand. He recently worked for NHS Tayside and the University of Dundee, where he was the Lead for Sustainable Anaesthesia and Lead for Healthcare Sustainability Teaching, instituting a variety of measures to reduce the environmental impact of clinical anaesthesia, and integrating planetary health teaching into the undergraduate medical curriculum. He is currently undertaking a doctorate in medical education and sustainable healthcare.

He now works as a Specialist Anaesthetist in Christchurch, teaches undergraduate medical students at the University of Otago, and supports research in the Department of Anaesthesia.
