Ground motion simulations for Dunedin and Mosgiel, Otago, New Zealand
Otago Geology's Anna Kowal will present the results of her PhD research on ground motion (earthquake hazard) simulations for Dunedin and Mosgiel.
Large scenario earthquakes are developed for the local and regional sources to develop physics-based ground motion simulations via 2D basin and site response modelling. A major part of the research is dedicated to modelling site effects.
The impedance contrast resulting from soft soils overlying the harder rocks may cause amplification of ground motion. Confidence in the simulation results is gained through undertaking historical and empirical validation exercises.
