Alexander & Gladys Shepherd Farming Scholarships

Applications are welcomed from persons in the Taranaki Province who wish to become farmers or work in the rural sector on the land and are under the age of 21 years at the commencement of their studies. Scholarships are for the purpose of obtaining further education or training which would be useful to them in farming pursuits or the attainment of a university degree in agriculture. This round is for students up to the age of 21 already undertaking degrees or courses (i.e. are part way through their studies already).

Students undertaking rural financial courses will be considered, providing they are also undertaking agriculture or horticultural studies.
The Alexander and Gladys Shepherd Scholarships are not open to students studying veterinary science.

23 Apr Don Linklater Memorial Bursary
To honour the contribution made to the Manawatū-Whanganui region and to local government by the late Don Linklater, Horizons Regional Council Chairman 1989-2000, we are offering a bursary for university study. The Don Linklater Memorial Bursary has a total of $8,000 per year available for up to four recipients, one of the four bursaries will be considered based on meeting the eligibility criteria and their iwi/hapū connection to the region. This bursary needs to be applied for each year.

To be eligible students should be studying in 2026 at undergraduate or postgraduate level, either internally or extramurally, in a field relevant to Horizons work. Relevant areas include resource management, environmental planning, environmental engineering and modelling with particular emphasis on river and drainage basin dynamics.

Applicants must be from the Horizons region (although they may study outside of it) and be a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident.

Scholarships are for the purpose of obtaining further education or training which would be useful to them in farming pursuits or the attainment of a university degree in agriculture. This round is for students up to the age of 21 already undertaking degrees or courses (i.e. are part way through their studies already).

NZ Refugee Health Scholarships

ASPIRE Aotearoa
Master's and PhD top-up postgraduate research scholarships for Māori and Pacific students.

The scholarships will provide supplementary funding to students who are awarded University of Otago PhD or Masters scholarships. The amount of the supplement is $15,000 per annum (or $7,500 for part-time students) for PhD students or $8500 over 1 year (or the equivalent pro-rata amount part-time) for Masters students. The supplement will provide an additional stipend and fund some research-related expenses. To be eligible, applicants will need to develop a research proposal (ASPIRE Aotearoa members will be able to assist with this work) that aligns broadly with ASPIRE Aotearoa’s aims and research interests. These include:

  • Research on smokefree and related policies couched with Māori or Pacific worldviews,
  • Investigation of smoking and vaping determinants, beliefs and behaviours – particularly as these relate to inequity and priority groups,
  • Research to inform and advance smokefree goals for Māori or Pacific peoples.
