Galactic justice quest: Designing a fair society on a new planet

Could we design a 'just' society on a new planet without knowing who we might be when we arrive?

Politics is all about understanding our relationship with power, who wields power in our society, how power impacts us in our day-to-day lives, and whether the power exerted in our society leads to a just life. In the Politics project group at Hands-on at Otago, we will seek to answer the question “What makes for a just life?”

Through interactive group work, thought experiments, and discussions, students will delve into the world of political decision-making, designing a society on a distant Earth-like planet that will (hopefully) be fair and equal.

At the end of the week, an exciting experiment will take place in which the group will test their simulated society with brand-new identities to see just how fair their new world is. Also, throughout the week we will discuss New Zealand politics, international relations, and come to grips with what it really means to study politics at Otago.

Will we create a just society for everyone? Will anyone be left behind? Sign up to Politics at Hands-on at Otago to find out.
