The nature of theatre performance involves a range of hazards to consider. Within the theatre, there is heavy lifting to be done, use and construction of props, as well as use of specialist lighting equipment and special effects equipment.

Theatre staff often need to work in small spaces, which poses both an occupational hazard and a fire safety risk. Small spaces may be difficult to evacuate, and there may be a range of flammable materials around.
