Research

Peter McIntyre has been a Professor in the Department of Women’s and Children’s Health of the University of Otago since 2018 and a Professor in the Discipline of Child and Adolescent Health of the University of Sydney since 2004. He graduated in Medicine from the University of Queensland and studied paediatrics in Brisbane, subspecialising in infectious diseases after training in Sydney and later qualifying in public health medicine. His PhD was in the epidemiology and prevention of invasive Hib disease and he has since had major interests in invasive pneumococcal disease, meningococcal disease and pertussis. He led the world’s largest trial of neonatal pertussis vaccine from 2009-14.

From 2004- 2017 he was Director of the National Centre for Immunisation Research and Surveillance of Vaccine-Preventable Diseases at the Children’s Hospital and University of Sydney. He is an author of more than 400 publications, relating to a wide range of vaccines and vaccine-preventable disease topics. He was made an Officer of the Order of Australia in January 2020 for “distinguished service to medicine, medical education, child and adolescent health”.
