Research

Phillipa Barnes is a Research Fellow with the Department of Medicine at the University of Otago, Wellington. Her main research interests are in respiratory and allergic disease health in children. Phillipa has worked on a considerable number of projects within this arena looking at: identifying childhood risk factors of asthma and allergies; probiotics in the prevention of eczema; associations between bedroom environment and the incidence of rhinovirus infections; housing factors associated with new onset wheeze; probiotic use in the prevention of ear infections and colds in young children; the microbiota of NZ Homes and any influences on health.?

As well as undertaking field work, Phillipa also takes the role of data manager for these projects.? She has extensive experience in designing and maintaining study databases using MS Access, REDCAP and Qualtrics.
