Teaching
Samuel teaches into the Bachelor of Oral Health clinical papers including DEOH202, DEOH203, DEOH302 and DEOH303. He is also the Second Year Coordinator for the Bachelor of Oral Health programme.

Research

Samuel (Hāmiora) is the Manupiki Māori / Associate Dean Māori and Pūkenga Matua / Senior Lecturer in Oral Health at Te Kaupeka Pūniho – Faculty of Dentistry.

Samuel is also a registered and practicing oral health therapist and has experience in both the public and private dental sectors in Aotearoa.

Samuel's research interests lie in hauora Māori (particularly oral health), oral health sector workforce, dental public health and advocacy. Samuel joined Te Kaupeka Pūniho as a Professional Practice Fellow and became a Lecturer in 2019. He completed his Master of Public Health, which focused on Māori expert views of antimicrobial resistance using a One Health approach.

Samuel remains committed to Te Ao Mārama's vision of hei oranga niho mo te iwi Māori, good oral health for Māori, for life.

Additional details

Samuel was awarded Oral Health Therapist of the Year in Aotearoa New Zealand in 2018 by the New Zealand Oral Health Association.

He was also made a Fellow of the Royal Society of Public Health (UK) in 2024.
