Research

Areas of research interest:

  • Mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic
  • The effects of physical activity on health (mental, physical, and social) and, in particular nature-based physical activity
  • Motivational theory (self-determination theory, acceptance and commitment therapy)
  • Behaviour change and motivation for health behaviours in the general population and those with specific (those living with serious mental illness)
  • Health service user experiences and co-design
  • Qualitative and quantitative methodologies

Matthew is currently leading projects that investigate the physical health of people living with serious mental illness, including the co-design of a healthy lifestyle programme for young people experiencing first episode psychosis, funded by Otago Division of Health Sciences and Lotteries Health Research grants.
