Clinical
James is a respiratory physician and leads the severe and complex asthma service at Capital, Coast and Hutt Valley District.

Research

James is a clinician and researcher with a focus on collaborative approaches to improve care for patients living with lung diseases; through local service redesign, national guidelines, education and international research collaborations.

Research interests include:

  • Founding co-chief investigator of the Australia New Zealand Respiratory Audit Program (ANZRAP), a long-term research and quality improvement program to improve the quality of care, clinical outcomes and health service provision for people with respiratory illness in Australia and New Zealand.
  • Treatable traits: Following on from a PhD on phenotypes of airway disease James has an interest in the role of personalised medicine and applying the concept of treatable traits to optimise the management patients with asthma and COPD. He was the PI for a recently completed HRC funded feasibility study of “Treatable Traits for the Management of Asthma” and an Associate Investigator for the Centre of Excellence Treatable Traits, a consortium of world-renowned clinicians, researchers and key respiratory organisations who are collaborating to improve healthcare outcomes for people with chronic airway diseases.
  • Severe and complex asthma: James is co-chair of the national severe asthma MDM and has actrive research interests in severe and complex asthma.
