Eligibility criteria
There are a number of entry categories for the health professional degree programmes. They are:
Health Sciences First Year (HSFY) Category
All school leavers or others who have not previously attended a university or tertiary institution must seek entry to the health professional degree programmes by completing the HSFY course in their first year of study at Otago. The HSFY course can be taken at Otago only.
Further information about the HSFY course
Who can take HSFY?
Anyone who has not previously completed HSFY, or not have previously completed this set of seven papers in any single calendar year may attempt the HSFY course providing that they have admission to the University.
There are no subject requirements for entry into Health Sciences First Year (HSFY). However, we strongly recommend high school students take Chemistry, Physics and Calculus to NCEA Level 3 (or equivalent), and if possible, also take an English-rich subject as preparation.
If students haven’t taken Physics and Chemistry to NCEA level 3, opportunities to prepare for Physics and Chemistry are listed on the preparing to study HSFY webpage below.
Preparing to study Health Sciences First Year
Competition to gain a place in second year health professional programmes is high particularly for Dentistry and Medicine. Students in Equity Group pathways should contact their Equity Group lead for advice and support.
Attainment of the relevant minimum grade for entry to the HSFY course does not guarantee that applicants will be competitive in entry to second-year courses.
When does the HSFY course start?
The HSFY course has one intake only each year (late February).
