Travelling to New Zealand
Make sure you book your flights to arrive in time for the International Student Enrolment and Orientation Seminars. All new international students must attend one of these seminars - please register for a seminar as soon as possible.
Check the key dates for international students before you book your travel.
Most international flights to New Zealand arrive in Auckland, Wellington or Christchurch. From these cities a domestic flight is required to travel to Dunedin. It is important to book domestic flights at the same time as you make your international bookings.
If your flight stops in Australia on the way to New Zealand you will need a Transit Visa - even if you do not leave the airport in Australia.
You could also take a bus from Christchurch to Dunedin which is a 6½ hour journey.
Dunedin Airport: Booking an Airport Transfer
Dunedin Airport is located 30 minutes drive from the centre of the city.
If you are a new international student you can arrange a subsidised airport transfer with Kiwi shuttles and be taken to your accommodation. To arrange a transfer from Dunedin airport email Kiwi Shuttles at firstname.lastname@example.org no later than 7 days before you arrive. The transfer costs NZ$15.00 if you pay by cash (if you prefer to pay by eftpos or credit card there will be a NZ$2.00 surcharge). Please note that this price is only available upon your arrival in Dunedin before the semester begins. During the semester period you will be charged the non-subsidised fee of NZ$20.00.
Please include the following information in the body of the email - Attention: International Student Code: INTD2020 along with your name, arrival date and time, flight number and if you have extra luggage or large items. You will receive a confirmation email outlining arrangements at the airport and who to contact if there are any last minute changes to your flight details. If you do not advise them that you will not be at Dunedin Airport at the booked time, you are liable for a NZ$50.00 penalty (the Freephone number for calls within New Zealand is 0800 365 494).
Please make sure your bookings for your return home are on a date after the conclusion of the examination period.
