Research

Nienke Hagedoorn's research interests include improving public health outcomes focusing on invasive bacterial infections, immunisations, and targeted prescription of antibiotics.

She is a medical doctor and PhD trained in the Netherlands. She has clinical experience as a doctor in paediatrics, internal medicine and public health. She obtained her PhD at the department of general paediatrics at Erasmus MC (Rotterdam, the Netherlands) and obtained her Master of Science in Clinical Epidemiology. Her PhD focused on the management of children with fever at European Emergency Departments and was part of the Horizon2020 European union funded PERFORM project (Personalised Risk assessment in Febrile illness to Optimise Reallife Management across the European Union). PERFORM is a large prospective multicentre cohort which aims to identify and validate new discriminators for bacterial and viral infection in febrile children. Nienke's PhD focused particularly on improving diagnostic strategies and antibiotic treatment of children with fever.

After moving to Christchurch in 2022, she first worked as a postdoctoral research fellow at the department of Primary Care and department of Paediatrics working on vaccine preventable diseases and community antibiotic prescriptions.

In October 2022, she joined the Centre of International Health working on systematic reviews and meta-analyses of published data on typhoid fever epidemiology under supervision of Professor John Crump.
