The Department of Mathematics and Statistics is pleased to host the New Zealand Statistical Association (NZSA) 2025 conference, to be held in person on the University of Otago campus in Dunedin.
Time: 12pm start (Monday), 12pm finish (Wednesday)

Registration is open to members of the New Zealand Statistical Association (NZSA).
Early bird registration for the conference closes on 17 October 2025.
The closing date for registration is 15 November 2025.

Invited speakers
Kerrie Mengersen
Queensland University of Technology
Kerrie Mengersen is a Distinguished Professor of Statistics at Queensland University of Technology and Director of the Centre for Data Science. She is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science, the Academy of Social Sciences of Australia, and the Queensland Academy of the Arts and Sciences. Her work focuses on Bayesian methods, statistical computation, and complex data analysis across a range of areas including environment, genetics, health and medicine, and industry.
Thomas Lumley
University of Auckland
Thomas Lumley is Professor of Biostatistics at the University of Auckland and a Fellow of both the American Statistical Association and the Royal Society of New Zealand. His research spans statistical computing, complex survey analysis, regression modelling, and semiparametric methods. He is a member of the R Core Team and the author of the widely used “survey” package in R.
Darryl MacKenzie
Proteus
Darryl MacKenzie is Principal Biometrician at Proteus, New Zealand, and Honorary Associate Professor at the University of Otago. His research focuses on species occurrence models and since co-founding Proteus in 2000 , Darryl has worked closely with clients to develop statistical models for environmental monitoring programs, finding tailored, data-driven solutions that balance statistical rigour with practical solutions.

Early-career travel grant
The New Zealand Statistical Association (NZSA) is offering needs-based financial support to help early-career researchers attend our 2025 conference.
To be eligible for funding, applicants must:
- Be an early-career researcher
- Be either seeking employment, or in an employment situation where the cost of attendance is not covered by your employer
- Provide a statement outlining why financial support is required, along with any other relevant information
- Be a member of the NZSA
This fund is managed by the Awards committee and grants are awarded at the committee’s discretion.

Student travel award
The New Zealand Statistical Association (NZSA) is funding travel awards for students attending our 2025 conference.
To be eligible for these awards, applicants must:
- Be a student enrolled at a New Zealand institution at the time of registration. Students are required to have their supervisor email the NZSA Awards Committee convenor to confirm their enrolment:
